Richard M. Ortwein OBITUARY

Richard “Dick” Ortwein, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, naval officer, and respected business and community leader, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, in Newport Beach after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 84. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Dick graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963 and served with distinction in the U.S. Navy, completing three tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Ingersoll. While stationed in San Diego, he met his future wife, Sheila. They married in 1969 and shared 56 years together. After his military service, Dick built a successful career in commercial real estate, serving as president of Koll Development Company and cofounder of Focus Real Estate. He helped shape Southern California’s development landscape and was known for his integrity and leadership. Dick was also deeply committed to service, holding leadership roles with the American Red Cross and Hoag Memorial Hospital, where he served as Chairman of the Board. He was an adjunct professor at USC and mentored many in the real estate community. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Sheila, his sister Joanne and children Stephanie (Paul), Michael (Ashley), David (Cynthia), and Brian (Kathryn), as well as his cherished grandchildren Lawson, Kathryn, Caden, Charley, Liam, Wesley, and Evan. Dick was buried at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. July 31 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hoag Hospital Foundation.
