EUGENE, Ore. – USC’s Andre De Grasse swept the sprints with a pair of exceedingly fast, if wind-aided, times and host Oregon won its second consecutive men’s team title Friday at the revamped NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In a span of 55 minutes in the meet’s compacted schedule, DeGrasse won the 100 meters in 9.75 seconds (+2.7) and the 200 in 19.58 (+2.4). His 200 time was the fastest ever by a collegiate runner under any conditions.
De Grasse became the fourth USC man to ever sweep the events and the first since Clancy Edwards did it in 1978.
De Grasse also ran the second leg of the Trojans’ fourth-place 400 relay team (38.75), which also included football standout Adoree’ Jackson on the anchor leg. USC’s time was just .06 seconds off the school record of 38.69 set in 1980. USC finished fifth in the men’s team standings with 40.5 points, its fifth-best total since the scoring format changed in 1985.
Marquis Dendy of Florida dominated the triple jump, winning with a wind-aided 58 feet, 1-1/4 inches. He also won the long jump on Wednesday, his second straight victory in the two events.
Oregon wrapped up its day with a 1-2-4 finish in the 5,000 — Edward Cheserek and Eric Jenkins going first and second, as they did in the 10,000 two days earlier.
