ORANGE COUNTY GIRLS OUTSTANDING COMPETITOR 2024-25

This award recognizes an Orange County athlete who was a standout in multiple sports, a team leader and someone who also excelled in areas outside of sports.

Name: Jaslene Massey

School: Aliso Niguel

Year: Junior

Sports: Volleyball, track and field

Notable highlights: An all-league volleyball player. A state champion in track and field. A scholar with challenging courses.

Jaslene Massey’s well-rounded abilities kept her busy at Aliso Niguel in the 2024-25 school year but the junior didn’t mind. She’s more than comfortable as a multi-sport athlete.

“I love it,” she said. “I love working out. I love lifting. I love every aspect of being a dual-sport athlete. The most important part to remember is balance.”

Massey struck a balance at a high level, and for her accomplishments, is The Register’s Orange County Girls Outstanding Competitor for 2024-25.

In the fall, the 5-foot-10 Massey played middle blocker in volleyball. The daughter of former UC Irvine volleyball and track standout Popi Edwards, Massey earned second-team All-South Coast League and MVP at the Bishop Diego tournament for the Wolverines (21-10).

In the spring, she was selected Orange County’s female athlete of the year in track and field, the sport that she plans to pursue in college.

Massey became the first county girl to win the discus at the CIF State championships since El Toro’s Hilary Fraser in 2007 by throwing 163 feet and 9 inches. She took second in the shot with a throw of 45-5 1/4 as she attempted to become only the second county girl to ever to sweep the discus and shot put at the state finals.

Massey also found time to win the long jump at the South Coast League finals with a mark of 17-5.

She extended her success to the classroom by earning a 4.6 grade-point average in the spring. Her classes included AP physics, U.S. history and language.

“Jaslene is an amazing role model,” Aliso Niguel track and field coach Patricia Lusar said. “Not only does she push herself to be the best that she can be, she inspires her teammates.”

Corona del Mar’s Jackson Harlan is the OC Boys Outstanding Competitor

PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Emma Champagne and Sara Moynihan, JSerra

No Orange County beach volleyball team advanced further than they did in the CIF Southern Section pairs championships.

The JSerra duo of Emma Champagne and Sara Moynihan made it to the CIF-SS pairs semifinals. That was one of many highlights for Champagne and Moynihan.

Champagne and Moynihan, both juniors, went 3-0 in pool play in the CIF-SS pairs tournament. In the bracketed playoffs, they defeated the Huntington Beach team of Olivia Foye and Molly Serafin in the first round and Keile Belkin and Makenzie Holden of Newbury Park in the second round.

Their quarterfinal opponents were their teammates, the JSerra team of Ruby Hill and Skylar Noble. Hill-Noble had defeated Champagne-Moynihan in the Trinity League championships.

Champagne-Moynihan lost to the Redondo team of twin sisters Addison and Avery Junk 21-19, 21-14 in the semifinals. The Junk twins went on to win the CIF-SS title.

The Champagne-Moynihan tandem also helped JSerra reach the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 1 beach volleyball team championships. The second-seeded Lions lost to eventual champion Redondo 3-2 in the semifinals.

JSerra finished 17-2 overall and won the Trinity League championship with a 6-0 league record. The Lions losses were to Redondo inthe CIF-SS Division 1 team semis and to Mira Costa. Mira Costa was the team Redondo defeated in the CIF-SS Division 1 team finals.

Moynihan committed to USC for beach volleyball. Champagne committed to UCLA for beach volleyball.

Champagne and Moynihan became teammates last season as sophomores. JSerra coach Heidi Colapinto said the two are cohesive in every way.

“They really complement each other,” Colapinto said. “A lot of their success is from what’s going on inside their minds.

“They’re top-level competitors, physically gifted for sure, and they really don’t like to lose. They play well under pressure, they play together and they’re mentally strong.”

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Logan Hutnick, Huntington Beach, Sophomore

The best Orange County boys volleyball team this past season was Huntington Beach.

Logan Hutnick was the best player on that Huntington Beach team.

For leading the Oilers to an outstanding season, Hutnick is the Orangte County boys volleyball player of the year for the 2025 season.

Hutnick, a 6-foot-6 sophomore outside hitter, was a Sunset League player of the year, sharing the award with teammate Kai Gan, the Oilers senior setter.

He made all-tournament in all three tournaments  in which the Oilers played. Hutnick had a team-high 560 kills and added 72 blocks, 30 service aces and 204 digs.

Huntington Beach finished 36-5 overall and won the Sunset League championship with a 12-0 league record. The Oilers played in the CIF Southern Section Division I final and in the CIF Southern California Regional Division I final.

In the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship match Hutnick had a team-high 22 kills as the Oilers lost to Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in five sets. It was not the outcome Hutnick preferred, but he was pleased with the way Huntington Beach played against Mira Costa which would go on to win the first-ever CIF State boys volleyball championship and finish at No. 1 in the MaxPreps national rankings.

“Even though we lost,” Hutnick said, “I think that was the best we played. I liked the way we pulled together in that fourth set.”

Mira Costa served for match point four times in the fourth set. The Oilers kept scoring points to extend the set until coming away with a 31-29 win to tie the match at two sets apiece. The fifth set was tied 5-5, Mira Costa took a 14-7 lead, Huntington Beach battled back to make it 14-11 before Mira Costa scored the championship point.

The Oilers would play Mira Costa one more time. Huntington Beach lost to Mira Costa in the CIF Southern California Regional Division I final. Hutnick led the Oilers with 17 kills.

Huntington Beach coach Craig Pazanti was impressed with how Hutnick made the transition from being a middle blocker as a freshman to outside hitter for his sophomore year.

“Logan played great on defense, was a great passer and his offense speaks for itself,” Pazanti said. “He has the desire to be great. He’s a special athlete now but he’s nowhere near as good as he’s going to be.”

Hutnick said beyond all the wins and great matches, the most satisfying part of the season was the group effort that was essential to the Oilers success.

“I loved the way I felt on the court with my teammates,” Hutnick said. “It was really special to feel the teamwork and to be part of this family.”

COACH OF THE YEAR

Craig Pazanti, Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach went undefeated in the always-tough Sunset League and advanced to the championship matches in the top division in the CIF Southern Section and CIF Southern California Regional playoffs.

For leading the Oilers to a high-achieving season, Craig Pazanti is the Orange County boys volleyball coach of the year for the 2025 season.

Huntington Beach finished 36-5 overall and 12-0 in league. The Oilers are No. 2 in the MaxPreps final national boys volleyball rankings, behind No. 1 Manhattan Beach Mira Costa which gave Huntington Beach three of its five losses.

Graduation took away some star players from last season’s team, so Pazanti had a puzzle to assemble. He moved some of those puzzle pieces around during the season to finalize a winning product.

“This season was about finding a group of guys that believed they could be good,” he said. “We were trying to be the best version of 2025 Huntington Beach volleyball that we could be. Aiden Atencio and Kai Gan became our vocal senior leaders after they both bought into being ‘that guy.’”

Pazanti has coached Huntington Beach to three CIF-SS championships and to four CIF SoCal Regional championships. He coached Mater Dei girls volleyball to three CIF-SS titles before going to Huntington Beach 18 years ago.

Huntington Beach loses again to formidable Mira Costa in volleyball regional final https://www.ocregister.com/2025/05/24/huntington-beach-loses-again-to-formidable-mira-costa-in-volleyball-regional-final/ Sun, 25 May 2025 05:28:44 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=10945720&preview=true&preview_id=10945720 MANHATTAN BEACH — Sequels rarely live up to the standard set by the original and that was evident in the rematch between the Huntington Beach and Mira Costa boys volleyball teams.

Eight days ago in the CIF-SS Division 1 final, Huntington Beach went toe-to-toe with the Mustangs in a five-set thriller that the Mustangs won.

But on Saturday night, the Oilers were swept by MaxPreps’ top-ranked team in the nation, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16, in the CIF Southern California Regional Division I final at Mira Costa High.

With the victory, the Mustangs (36-2) earned a trip to Fresno for the inaugural CIF State Championships for boys volleyball on Saturday May 31.

Huntington Beach (36-5) was rolling in the first set but was unable to hold on to its nine-point lead and also lost Colin Choi at a crucial point in the frame.

According to Oilers coach Craig Pazanti, Choi didn’t step on his teammates’ foot, he just rolled his ankle on his own after a big swing at the net. He returned in the second set but was unavailable for the final part of the first set.

“You know, we lose our best passer at the end of set one,” Pazanti said, “and who knows, would’ve, should’ve, could’ve, but I’m guessing if he doesn’t get hurt, we win set one. And you know, maybe it’s a different mental approach to the rest of the match. But give them (Mira Costa) a ton of credit.”

Mira Costa coach Greg Snyder concurred with Pazanti about Choi’s brief absence from the court.

“I think Colin injuring his ankle in that first set really was a change.” Snyder said. “I think we were coming back, but that opened the door and just our momentum completely shifted when that happened. And I honestly think that first set probably would have been won by Huntington if that didn’t happen. And this match would have been completely different.”

Oilers outside hitter Logan Hutnick had a match-high 17 kills and opposite Ben Arguello had nine kills.

Cooper Keane had a team-high 16 kills and Grayson Bradford added seven kills and 5.5 blocks.

The 6-11 Bradford was a towering figure at the net for Mira Costa, which had a 7-4 advantage in total blocks over the Oilers.

Pazanti looked back on the Oilers’ accomplishments this season, which include winning the Sunset League for the first time since 2016 and finishing the season 36-5 as a CIF SoCal Regional finalist.

“We played, including tonight, and if you include the Top 10 in CIF, including the two teams that finished in the finals of Division 2, played 21 matches against the Top 10 in CIF this year and we were 17-4, against the top (teams),” Pazanti said. “So we don’t duck anybody. Year to year, we’re going to play against the best competition, and that’s how we get better. It would have been nice to get one more match, but you can’t be disappointed when you have that kind of a season.”

In other CIF SoCal Regional finals Saturday:

Mater Dei 3, Francis Parker 1: The Monarchs won the Division II regional title with a 25-12, 26-24, 19-25, 27-25 victory over Francis Parker.

Mater Dei will face Buchanan of Clovis in the state championship game Friday, May 30, at Fresno City College.

Sage Hill 3, Clairemont 0: Sage Hill won the Division III regional title with a sweep, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22, of Clairemont.

Sage Hill advances to face International in the state championship game Saturday, May 31, at Fresno City College.
